The Bexhill museum was started in 1914 by a small group of dedicated enthusiasts who specialised in natural history, archaeology and ethnography. It has since developed into a fascinating and comprehensive collection. It gives incredible insight into the history of Bexhill, its famous residents and visitors, and the important historic milestones that have made Bexhill internationally famous. The Museum is an ideal place for adults and children alike to discover history and journey through time.

Dinosaurs

Over one hundred and thirty million years ago Iguanodon, a huge plant eating dinosaur, ten metres and long and weighing 2 tons roamed Bexhill. Fossil dinosaur teeth, bones and foot prints are on display at the museum and new examples are still regularly being found in and around Bexhill

Early Beginnings

Bexhill village really began to develop as a town in 1804 when it became home to almost 3 thousand soldiers of the Hanoverian King's German Legion at a time when the resident population was less than 1 thousand. The Legion was station here as part of England’s defence against Napoleon. They finally left Bexhill in 1814 to fight at the battle of waterloo.

What To See

Victorian and Edwardian

At the end of the 19th Century Bexhill became know for its health giving air and its clear spa waters attracting the rich and the famous who also availed themselves of the revolutionary seafront cycling boulevard.

After the first world War

Strong links with the Indian Raj at the beginning of the 20th century influenced much of Bexhill's seafront architecture and during the 1920s and 1930s artefacts were added to the museum collection from India, Egypt and Africa, donated by residents who had returned from service abroad
