Victoriana: Crinolines & Curios - starts February 2011

vicky_old2Make an early visit to see some of the delights of the Victorian age at the new exhibition at Bexhill Museum. Victoriana: Crinolines and Curios has as its central focus a magnificent mourning dress worn by Queen Victoria in 1892.

Together with the mourning dress, the exhibition displays adults’ and children’s clothes from the same era and many of these items come from the old Manor Barn collection. The aim is to illustrate different aspects of Victorian life, at home, at work and play and exhibits range from a traditional farmer’s smock to a Parisian child’s dress and bonnet. There is also the chance to see close up the structure of crinolines and bustles and wonder at the accessories, the parasols, the scent bottles, the buttons, the exquisite lace and jewellery, including some rare pieces made of bog oak and even human hair. Selected pieces of furniture accompany the costumes including a couple of rare pole screens and a proper Victorian sewing basket, lovingly set out with its contents on display.

Entrance to the Victoriana Exhibition is included in the museum admission rates - for details and opening times please visit the Your Visit page.

The collection of costumes and artefacts are re-creations of Medieval life as we portray it at various places of Historical Interest. Some of the objects in the glass cases are authentic pieces, the rest are handmade replicas based on writings, drawings and remains found on archaeological digs.

We are part of a group based in Brighton with members all over the country. We re-enact life as it was from various periods with the Medieval time being our foremost period.
