Elodie Blanc - costume intern

FOR three months a young lady from the south of France has laboured in the Costume Group’s cramped ground floor workshop behind the Technology Gallery.

Elodie Blanc comes from Grenoble but from October until the closure on the museum for the Christmas-New Year break she has been a diligent intern in Bexhill.

Elodie has delighted in working with the museum’s notable costume collection. Her work has covered both careful conservation and meticulous archiving; putting on computer file her own photographic record of everything from lace to footwear.

Does she have a favourite? Elodie was carefully packing historic footwear with tissue paper when interviewed.

“I love shoes,” she admitted.

Georgina Bradley, who heads the museum’s Costume Group, said: “Elodie commenced her secondment at the museum on 1st October and left on 14th December.

“The museum has a notable collection of assorted laces including Bedfordshire, Maltese, Honiton, Guipure, machine and many more.

“Elodie worked diligently in the workroom and store of the costume collection accessioning lace collars and cuffs, fichus, bonnets and shawls which had been transferred from The Manor Barn, also, tatting, broderie anglaise and crochet items. These were all counted, logged, labelled by hand-stitching, photographed and put onto our server, she then repacked nearly 400 items.

“She also took an interest in the shoe collection and has commenced these, finding lot's that are vintage, which she liked very much.

“She enjoyed all the work that she did because it was an environment different from what she was used too (secretarial) and also found pleasure discovering the different era of each item.

We had also welcomed her warmly and given her responsibilities which, with clear directions she was able to do, it was a good feeling of achievement.

“She will come back to England again, but in the summer when it's warmer!”

Georgina added: “We will be having a special 'Lace and Embroidery' weekend on 27th and 28th of April when the Education room will be full up with treasures.”
