Geotourist comes to Bexhill

VISITORS and residents alike can now learn about Bexhill’s landmarks and their history via a new phone app.

Volunteers at Bexhill Museum have taken advantage of an offer from specialist company Geotourist to add Bexhill to the fast-growing worldwide list of tourist destinations offering its information facility.

Owners of mobile phones can now go to the firm’s geotourist.com website and download its service. By then allowing the app to discover their location, or by selecting “Bexhill” and a specific part of the town on their smart phones they can have instant access to a current photo of the chosen area plus a brief spoken commentary on points of heritage interest.

Members of the independent museum’s local history group have been working since before Easter to put the first areas of town – Buckhurst Place, Devonshire Square and Western Road - into the system.

Old Town, East Parade, Sidley and Little Common will follow shortly.

The local history team offers regular conducted walks for the public via the Egerton Road museum’s popular Stepping Out series to explain points of interest in the town.

The team has drawn on this fund of information and the museum’s extensive photo archive to start the Geotourist service locally. It has also drawn heavily on the research and photographic record undertaken by team member Paul Wright for his Heritage Trail project for the museum. Heritage Trail leaflets are available from the museum.

Team colleague David Hatherell has recorded the voice-overs, working in association with Paul.

Full details of the Geotourist service and how to download and use it can be found on the bexhillmuseum.co.uk website in the Your Visit section - http://www.bexhillmuseum.co.uk/your-visit-11/bexhill-heritage-trail-audio-tours-1117.html

When the system is complete, tourists and residents will be able to obtain historical information of every significant landmark in the town.
