Here is just a small sample of what you can discover in the Sargent Gallery during your visit...

L S Lowry 

Bexhill Museum is privileged to have one of Lowry’s later works in our collection, which represents a local Sidley view - the derelict Down Mill in Gunter’s Lane; now demolished. Come and enjoy a rare opportunity to view one of Lowry’s lesser-known works, and learn more about the artist and the man. 

Moche and Chimu Pottery 

Bexhill Museum has a fascinating collection of clay pots made in what is now northern Peru by ancient South American people, whose societies thrived many years before the Inca empire reached its height. The Moche didn’t have a writing system, and so everything we know about them is gleaned from the artwork and symbolism on these ceramics. There is also an interesting story behind our acquisition of this collection. 

Sussex Pottery 

We have a collection of 18th and 19th century Sussex brownware pottery, including a rare pig whistle, some unusual money boxes, flagons and vases.  

Egyptology 

Bexhill Museum has a large collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts excavated from tomb-builders’ towns and a royal harem town, and donated to us in the early part of the 20th century. Come and learn about thousands of years of Ancient Egyptian life; what the Egyptians  cooked with, how they applied their cosmetics, how they buried their dead, mummification, important  gods and goddesses, pyramids, temples, writing, their beliefs, how their country was run, farming, children’s toys and trading.  

African Snake 

We have recently acquired this magnificent snakeskin which can be seen mounted on the wall at the north end of the gallery. The snake comes from Africa, and is probably a python. Can anyone identify it further for us? 

Non-European Social History Artefacts 

The Sargent Gallery also contains large collections of African and Austronesian social history artefacts which give a flavour of the colour, history and vibrancy of these continents and their peoples; from stone tools to musical instruments. Our Tibet and India cabinets represent the continent of Asia. 

Ancient Greek and Roman Artefacts 

The Sargent Gallery has a collection of pots and artefacts from Ancient Greece, including a magnificent hoplite helmet. We also have Roman pottery excavated from Crowhurst Park, Pevensey and elsewhere, as well as a magnificent quern stone, a votive head, and many other everyday objects.
